As the 2017-2018 season comes to an end, we would like to share the narratives written by our coaching staff and that were published in the program at this year's "Wayland-Cohocton Central School High School Athletic Awards" on Tuesday, June 5th, 2018. At the Athletic Awards, there was also an emotional testimony headed by Varsity Coach Julie Oas officially addressing the retirement of her and her co-coach, Amanda Azzi, from coaching at Wayland-Cohocton. Their success, commitment and love to this Cheerleading Program is immensely appreciated and will be missed by so many. Thank you again for all of your years of service!
Varsity Coaching Narrative (Julie Oas & Amanda Azzi):
"The Varsity Cheerleaders had what some would call a roller coaster season! There were some highs, lows, twists and turns! But through it all, the girls worked hard through blood, sweat, tears, bruises and sprained ankles to make it through to the end of the ride! We NEVER did the same routine twice....and sometimes not even with the same people!! We were making changes weekly, sometimes daily, and sometimes the DAY OF competition!!!! Our season began with 4 competitions that we would use as "learning tools" taking score sheets and making changes and improvements in hopes of better scores. The results were as follows:
Fairport Competition - 3rd place
Rush-Henrietta - 2nd place
Canaseraga Competition - 2nd place
Greater Rochester Competition - 3rd place
OF COURSE THEY HAD TO SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST...
-LCAA LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP - 1ST PLACE -
-SECTION V CHAMPIONSHIP - 1ST PLACE - (the 27th Section V Title for the Cheerleaders!!)
Congratulations to Marissa O'Connor for receiving the Nancy Saxton Leadership Award at Sectionals.
Winning Sectionals earned them their first ever trip to the NYSPHSAA State Championship in Syracuse, NY!! A couple of errors placed us in 11th out of 17 teams in the prelim round Although this may seem like a poor finish, they were only 1.6 points away from the Top 5 teams to move on to the second round! I would say that was impressive!
Congratulations to our LCAA All-Stars:
Karlee Chizuk, Marissa O'Connor, Kortni Parsons, Lilly Stenzel and Alex Duclos. Karlee, Marissa, Kortni and Lilly were also selected to cheer at the Exceptional Senior basketball game!
Members of the team are: SENIORS: Cassie Batzel, Karlee Chizuk, Marissa O'Connor, Kortni Parsons, Katryna Rock and Lilly Stenzel, JUNIORS: Alex Duclos, Sophie Holmes, Charlotte Kennedy and Sam Smalt, SOPHOMORES: Arianna Celentano and Michelle Conti"
Junior Varsity Coaching Narrative (Brooke Ferguson & Marissa O'Neal):
"The Wayland-Cohocton JV Cheerleading Team was co-coached by first-year coaches, Brooke Ferguson and Marissa O’Neal and ended their season with 9 dedicated athletes- Allie Chapman, Chloe Fox, Hailey Gotshall-VanGorder, Caitlyn Hersh, Rio Jacobs, Olivia Schledorn, Kendra Stewart, Kirsten Wambold, and Grace Willis. These athletes were able to learn new skills and start perfecting more advanced skills during the season through practices, game performances, and competitive performances. They were afforded the opportunity to compete at five different competitions throughout the season. At their very first competition at Avoca, they placed 3rd with a score of 61.3. At their second competition at Fairport, they placed 3rd with a score of 53.15. At their third competition at Rush Henrietta, they placed 2nd with a score of 65.1. At their fourth competition at Canaseraga, they placed 3rd with a score of 64.3. At their final competition at Blue Cross Arena, they placed 2nd with a score of 71.1. The JV Cheerleading Team worked hard during the Winter 2018 season and showed monumental growth in their competitive scores, going from their lowest score of 53.15 to their highest score of 71.1. Considering the fact that a large handful of the athletes were first-time cheerleaders, an almost twenty point jump in their competitive scoring is a perfect representation of the hard work and improvement they displayed this season!"
